XenDesktop 7.6: 10 Steps to Upgrade

XenDesktop 7.6 has been released yesterday. I’m very excited about the new release. Yesterday I posted a blog about the four major releases in XenDesktop 7.6. Now the product is released it’s time to check out the upgrade path.

XenDesktop 7.6 – The nine steps by Citrix

Citrix has broken the upgrade process in to nine easy steps. The steps are:

  1. Make sure that your Subscription Advantage date for licenses is no earlier than 2014.0815.
  2. Back up the Delivery Controller databases.
  3. Upgrade Director if it is installed on a separate machine from your Delivery Controllers.
  4. Backup templates and upgrade hypervisors (optional).
  5. Upgrade Provisioning Services if in use.
  6. Upgrade the Virtual Delivery Agent and perform an image update on all master images.
  7. Upgrade half of your Delivery Controllers (all components).
  8. Use the upgraded version of Studio to perform Site upgrade.
  9. Upgrade your remaining Delivery Controllers (all components)

If you put everything in to a flowchart diagram it looks like this:

And how about the tenth step?

Citrix has forgotten one step to add to their upgrade path. And that step is upgrading the license server. If you don’t users are unable to access resources.

According to the Citrix XenDesktop 7.6 system requirements I have to have Citrix License Server version 11.12.1.

Citrix also didn’t add the step for upgrading your StoreFront. I think it is because you are still able to use the Web Interface.

XenDesktop 7.6 – The ten steps by Bader

This are my ten steps to upgrade your current XenDesktop 7.x environment  to XenDesktop 7.6:

  1. Make sure that your Subscription Advantage date for licenses is no earlier than 2014.0815.
  2. Back up the Delivery Controller databases.
  3. Upgrade License server if it is installed on a separate machine from your Delivery Controllers.
  4. Upgrade Director if it is installed on a separate machine from your Delivery Controllers.
  5. Backup templates and upgrade hypervisors (optional).
  6. Upgrade Provisioning Services if in use.
  7. Upgrade the Virtual Delivery Agent and perform an image update on all master images.
  8. Upgrade half of your Delivery Controllers (all components).
  9. Use the upgraded version of Studio to perform Site upgrade.
  10. Upgrade your remaining Delivery Controllers (all components)

To make it visual I added the step to the flow chart Citrix has on the eDocs site. The steps should look like this:
